History
Valley Regional Hospital was established in 1893 by The Ladies Union Aid Society (LUAS). LUAS was originally comprised of 13 women who formed a voluntary corporation and founded Cottage Hospital, Sullivan County’s first and New Hampshire’s third hospital. The Society, composed of women from area churches, was drawn together by a common bond to help the “feeble and poor.”
A committee located a 30-acre property known as the R.B. Lull Farm or Keyes Farm, between Hanover and Elm Streets, for purchase at a price of $3,500.
There was widespread support for establishing a community-based hospital. Ten businessmen pledged $100 each. Many benefits took place—clambakes, strawberry suppers, lawn parties, concerts, lectures, rummage sales, and a children’s pageant.
With donations coming in renovations began. At that point, the area churches stepped forward each pledging to sponsor one bed in the two units of three beds each. In its first year of operation, Valley Regional Hospital treated 23 individuals with a medical staff of six and a surgical staff of three.
