Planned Giving

Leaving a Legacy through Planned Giving

A planned, or deferred, gift is a type of charitable gift that requires prior preparation, usually with the assistance of a financial advisor. A donor may fund his or her gift with cash or other assets. Either way, the benefits of a planned gift can be very attractive.

When you create a planned gift, you would potentially increase your current income, reduce taxes, avoid capital gains tax, or pass assets to family at a reduced tax cost, while making a significant donation to a charity, like Valley Regional Hospital. Planned gifts include bequests, trusts, real estate, charitable gift annuities, and retirement assets. To determine the most favorable method of making a gift, the donor, the charity, and the advisor need to take into account the donor's personal, philanthropic, financial, and tax objectives.

Benefits of Planned Gifts

  • Maximizes your charitable contribution
  • Allows advantageous tax deductions under both state and federal law
  • Turns appreciated assets into an income for yourself and/or others
  • Planned giving is a tool that helps you achieve your goals for Valley Regional Hospital as it enhances your personal financial plans and security.

Types of Planned Gifts

Bequests are a statement in your will designating a dollar amount or percentage of finances to a specified party. An example of a bequest to Valley Regional Hospital in your will could read as:

"I give the sum of $_________, (or _______% of the remainder of my estate), to the Valley Regional Hospital in Claremont, NH or its lawful successor."

You can also specify a purpose for your bequest, such as continuing education for nursing staff or placement into a specific Valley Regional fund. Some donors choose to give a percentage, rather than a dollar amount, to avoid updating their wills as finances can change over time.

Charitable Gift Annuity is a gift, typically cash or stock, set up to provide you with an annual, fixed income. Aside from the standard charitable tax deduction, the income you receive from your annuity is tax-free.

Life Insurance by listing Valley Regional as a beneficiary in your life insurance policy may also provide substantial tax advantages. You can list Valley Regional on your existing policy or create a new listing as your sole beneficiary.
