Valley Regional Healthcare is designated as an Alpha-1 Clinical Resource Center by the Alpha-1 Foundation, a group committed to finding a cure for Alpha-1 Antitrypsin Deficiency and to improving the lives of people affected by Alpha-1 worldwide. Alpha-1 antitrypsin deficiency is a hereditary cause of emphysema, a type of chronic obstructive pulmonary disease (COPD). Dr. Donald Mahler and his team were invited to apply to the Alpha-1 Foundation to be a Clinical Resource Center due to their work in this field. Valley Regional Hospital is the only Clinical Resource Center of the Alpha-1 Foundation in New Hampshire.
